Modes of delivery
By container
All overseas orders go in 20 ft or 40 ft containers. Bags of 25 kg or 50 kg are usually floor loaded, stacked directly on the container floor, and can also go on pallets. Bulk malt is loaded into a liner bag with a discharge spout.
A 20 ft container holds only a little over half as much malt as a 40 ft, yet the freight generally costs about the same, so a 40 ft works out considerably cheaper per tonne. We ship to the port of your choice.
By truck
Trucks go directly from the malting plant to your brewery, with no port handling or transhipment. Delivery by truck is possible within Europe only.
Tipper trucks carry bulk malt, and bagged malt travels on pallets.
Rail and sea freight
Most of our malt travels in containers: by rail from the malting facility to a port of loading, then by sea to the port of destination.
Loading
At the malting facility, containers are loaded with bagged malt, usually stacked directly on the floor, or with bulk malt in a food-grade liner bag secured by bracing bars.
To the rail terminal
Loaded containers go by truck to an inland container terminal.
Rail to the port
Block trains take the containers to the port of loading, such as Gdańsk for malt from Ukraine. Malt from China most often ships from Shanghai.
Sea freight
At the port, containers are loaded onto deep-sea vessels for the port of destination.

Lead times
and insurance
Lead times
Lead times are generally between 20 and 90 days from order to delivery, depending on the origin, the packaging, the route and the destination.
Shipments planned in advance, such as a regular monthly schedule, give the most reliable delivery dates.
Insurance and free days
We generally ship on CIF terms, with cargo insurance under Institute Cargo Clauses (C). Higher cover under ICC (B) or (A) is available on request.
We generally aim for 14 combined free days at the port of destination, to leave time for customs clearance and unloading.

Weight limits
These are the maximum possible weights for each shipment type. Actual loads can, and should, be lower where legal limits or your requirements call for it.

Customs documents
We send you the draft Bill of Lading and the other documents in draft for confirmation first, and send the originals once you have approved them.
